Susan is a member of both the International Society of Appraisers (ISA) and the American Association of Appraisers (AAA). She has more than 20 years of experience in Antiques, Fine Art and Collectibles. She was the President of Virginia Auction Sales, and served as Director of Antiques and Estates for Motley’s Auction House in Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with consignors, buyers, trust officers and fiduciaries, as well as museum curators and specialty experts in rare books, jewelry, paintings, glassware, silver,ceramics, folk art, furniture, date-testing and authentication.
Susan is certified in the Uniform Standards of Appraisal Practice (USPAP) through New York University, and has also been tested in ISA’s (International Society of Appraisers) Principles & Code of Ethics. She has completed study in theory and methodology as well as Antiques and Residential Contents. She is currently pursuing independent study in Fine Art & Art History through the Sotheby's Institute. She also completed compliance certification in USPAP through the American Association of Appraisers (AAA). Susan has conducted appraisals for attorneys, trustees, individuals and institutions, and provided testimony as an expert witness. Recently, she conducted a donation appraisal for the most recent acquitision to the Smithsonian Museum’s National Portrait Gallery.
An avid collector, Susan has decades of hands-on experience identifying, and researching a wide variety of Fine Art, furniture, decorative arts, antiques, & collectibles from the seventeenth through the twentty-first centuries.
Susan maintains strong relationships with national and international auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christies as well as specialty dealers in the U.S. and Europe. We frequently work with some of the nation’s leading authorities and subject matter experts across multiple categories of antiques and decorative arts. We also maintain a deep knowledge of specialty auctions and secondary markets to ensure that we stay up to date on auction results, comparable sales and trends in the broader art and antiques market.
We advise and assist private collectors with acquisitions, and IRS related estate and non-cash charitable donations to museums and institutions.
Susan is actively involved in organizations including The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Trust for Historic Preservation, The American Folk Art Museum, and Preservation Virginia.
